Paraguay win Women’s World Cup

first_img22 January 2007Paraguay, playing in the Women’s World Cup of Golf for the first time, stunned the other 21 competing countries at Sun City, to win the event by a big seven-shot margin. The United States finished second, with South Korea in third, and South Africa tied for sixteenth.Paraguay has only six golf courses in the entire country, but the tournament rookies made their mark from the opening round of singles, carding a 69 and a 70 to register a tournament record five-under-par for the opening round.Celeste Troche, who has only conditional non-exempt status on the LPGA Tour, fired a three-under 69 over the Gary Player Country Club course, while Julieta Granada, a rising star on the LPGA, went around in 70.Wire-to-wire victoryIn the alternate foursomes, played on Saturday, the Paraguayans posted a 75, before sealing a convincing wire-to-wire victory on Sunday with a seven-under-par 65 in betterball competition. That left them on nine-under-par 279, well clear of the USA, represented by the experienced duo of Juli Inkster and Pat Hurst.“Hopefully this win will boost golf back home in Paraguay and get the young girls interested,” said Granada, who won the LPGA’s season-ending ADT Championship to pocket a record $1-million.Looking back on her experience at Sun City, Granada said: “The people are so good. The crowds were awesome this week. They were cheering us on and they liked our outfits. It was a lot of fun. And the baboons. I liked the baboons. They are all my friends.”‘The whole resort is just amazing’Troche loved her experience at the world-famous resort. She said: “The hotel was fantastic. I’ve never been in a place like that. The whole resort is just amazing.”The USA’s Inkster, a Golf Hall of Fame member, complemented the South Americans on their victory. “Paraguay deserved to win. They played great three days in a row,” she said. The opening day of singles left the Americans in a hole from which they were unable to recover at they turned in rounds of 74 and 75, which left them 10 shots adrift of the Paraguayans. A 70 in the third round, the best score of any team, pulled them back to within five shots of the winners.South Korea secured third-place on 287 after matching the USA with a final round 67. Their third-round performance, a five-over 77, kept them from passing the Americans.Scotland, runners-up at Sun City in 2006, tied for fourth with Italy.Hosts’ struggleHosts South Africa never managed to mount any sort of challenge after a poor opening round in the singles, with Laurette Maritz posting a 77 and Ashleigh Simon a 78. In the alternate foursomes they combined for a 78 before closing strongly with a 66 in the betterball competition.Assessing South Africa’s showing, Laurette Maritz said: “We tried a bit too hard on the first day. We should have just stayed steady. But we really came back on the final day.”South Africa’s 301 tied them for sixteenth with last year’s champions Sweden and Spain. Results 279 – Paraguay (Troche, Granada) 69-70-75-65286 – United States (Hurst, Inkster) 74-75-70-67287 – Korea (Shin, Young) 71-72-77-67289 – Scotland (McKay, Moodie) 69-76-76-68; Italy (Sergas, Zorzi) 72-73-73-71291 – Australia (Wright, Garrett) 72-76-74-69293 – Taiwan (Hung, Ling) 71-79-77-66294 – Wales (Brewerton, Morgan) 74-74-78-68295 – England (Johnson, Davies) 76-78-74-67296 – New Zealand (Brooky, McKinnon) 72-74-77-73; Finland (Kuosa, Hakkarainen) 74-76-72-74297 – Brazil (Hanneman, Iida) 77-77-72-71299 – France (Nocera, Arricau) 78-79-73-69300 – Japan (Ueda, Moromizato) 77-78-78-67; Denmark (Juul, Tinning) 74-75-83-68301 – South Africa (Maritz, Simon) 77-80-78-66; Spain (Elosegui, Sanchez) 77-78-80-66 308; Sweden ( Alfredsson, Koch) 78-79-81-70313 – Germany (Monke, Simon) 72-93-73-75; Norway (Saether, Skarpnord) 80-80-75-78315 – Ireland (Kavanagh, Coakley) 80-80-80-75339 – Kenya (Njoroge, Naliaka) 81-88-91-79last_img read more

Talkin’ cheese for dairy month

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Celebrate dairy month and let’s talk cheese. Our family loves cheese and with our roots deep in the Ohio dairy business, I wouldn’t expect otherwise. According to the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board, 11.1 billion pounds of cheese were produced in the United States in 2013. Cheddar held the top spot, with Mozzarella, American, Other Italian and Cream Cheese rounding out the other top five cheese varieties produced. Shocker — Wisconsin is the No. 1 producer of cheese. Ohio is the top state in Swiss cheese production. From 2007 to 2013, the licensed cheese plants in Ohio nearly doubled going from 21 to 41, with 22 of those being artisan cheese makers. Artisan cheese makers are able to use their creativity for different, great tasting varieties that excite all the foodies and eateries in the current “eat local” movement. Also interesting is the fact that as the consumption of milk is going down, cheese consumption is rising. In 2007, the average American ate 33.5 pounds of cheese, about 2/3 pound per week. That’s a lot of cheese! The Detwilers, probably make up for those of you below that average. My cheese purchasing has slowed down greatly as the kids have left the nest but cheese continues to be a must have in our fridge. Our kids’ love affair with cheese has continued even as they have moved across the country. They have repeatedly requested the Pine River cheese spread that the Ohio Guernsey Breeders Association distributes at Christmas. Last month, we went to visit our son Luke at this naval base in Florida. His only request was that we: “Fill up the back of the CRV with cheese” and bring it down. To answer your question, we did not fill up the back with cheese but we did take him six pounds of his beloved American and super hot pepper cheese. As much as we love cheese, most cheese is high in fat. Here are a few ways to cut the fat and calories of cheese.Use the real cheese! Fat-free is not a great choice. It won’t melt well and I won’t tell you what Paul says it tastes like. Real cheese melts and tastes better.Use half the amount of the regular cheese, but remember that it will reduce the protein, fat, calories and calcium for the recipe. Some cheese like Parmesan doesn’t have a low fat version so using less works.Use a reduced fat variety that still tastes good and melts well. The calcium and protein should stay around the same but the fat and calories should go down. Look for low fat cheeses with less than six grams of fat per ounce.Choose high flavor cheese. If choosing reduced fat choose sharp or extra sharp to enhance the flavor. If using high flavor cheese like Parmesan/Romano, smoked cheese, blue gorgonzola or pungent cheeses that don’t have a low fat alternative just use less.Stay away from blankets of cheese! Try using around 1.5 cups of shredded cheese to top a casserole.Choose a healthy lower fat partner to go with your cheese. Choose fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans that are low fat and filled with fiber. Apples, Pears and even strawberries go great with cheese. The Cooperative Extension System as a Force Multiplier Toward Achieving Total Force Fitness

first_imgThe Cooperative Extension System is operated through the nation’s Land-Grant University System in partnership with the federal and state and local governments. As the federal partner, NIFA develops methods to address national priorities, funds and awards grants, and provides program leadership. The agency supports both the universities and local CES offices to bring science directly to the regional and county level. The Cooperative Extension System (CES) is a nationwide, non-credit educational network that addresses public needs by providing non-formal higher education and learning activities to farmers, ranchers, communities, youth, and families throughout the nation. With an organization that has been operating for over a century, CES is well positioned to efficiently get needed tools and knowledge into the hands of the people who need them.UNPRECEDENTED REACHAt a time when social, agricultural, food, and environmental challenges are mounting and needs are growing, CES is more relevant than ever. With its wide reach — an office in or near most of the nation’s approximately 3,000 counties — extension agents and educators help farmers grow crops, homeowners plan and maintain their homes, and youth learn skills to become tomorrow’s leaders. Military families and veterans have always been regular users of CES, however, greater emphasis on these populations is underway. The bottom line is that the Cooperative Extension System is a federal agency that has massive community reach, extensive experience in relevant subject areas, and a long history of a solid reputation. A few weeks ago we discussed the concept of force-multipliers and gave some background on the Cooperative Extension System, today we’d like to re-focus that conversation to discuss how the CES can work towards achieving Total Force Fitness. When working toward total force fitness within military communities, there are three essential questions you can begin with:How do you determine a methodology to assess the health, well-being, and resiliency needs/requirements of your community/population?How do you compare those needs/requirements to the community’s capability to meet those needs?Once you identify gaps in being able to meet your community needs, how do you develop a plan to address these gaps? Working Toward Total Force FitnessTotal Force Fitness (TFF) is a DoD framework for well-being that views “health, wellness, and resilience and as holistic concept”, requiring “a connection among mind, body, spirt, and social relationships”. Main Points:*TFF was created by the Joint Chiefs of Staff and became policy in 2011.TFF is the DoD’s 21st Century paradigm for improving Population Health, and includes eight domains of fitness.TFF is a state in which the individual, family and organization can sustain well-being and performance under all conditions. The Services are responsible for implementing TFF Programs.TFF requires the collaboration of the partners in public health.last_img read more
