U.S. grant on way for LAX projects

first_imgU.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta will announce today that the city of Los Angeles will get a $43 million federal grant to help pay the $241 million cost of replacing a runway at LAX and soundproofing nearby homes. Mineta and local officials are expected to make the announcement after touring the south runway at Los Angeles International Airport. Local officials would not provide details of Mineta’s planned announcement. But sources said $18 million of the grant will go to build a wider runway that can accommodate the new, larger A-380 Airbus planes. Another $15 million will be spent to soundproof homes in Inglewood and adjacent unincorporated areas, and $10 million will be used to buy land. The grant will be the second of several federal payments as the city completes the runway expansion as part of the LAX master plan. The $4 billion plan is designed to limit passenger traffic to 78.9 million people a year while modernizing LAX and making it safer for the traveling public. At the time, officials said the federal government had made LAX one of its national priorities for improvements. The contract for the work, expected to take 26 months, has been awarded to Tutor-Saliba Construction Corp. of Sylmar, and environmental reviews have been completed. In addition to the runway, the project calls for construction of taxiways and navigational aids as well as structural improvements to the Sepulveda Boulevard tunnel. Mineta aides said he also will be meeting with residents of homes that have been soundproofed through work paid for by the FAA to determine how well the program is working. Security up in Imphal ahead of PM’s visit

first_imgAhead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Manipur on January 4, security measures have been beefed up on an unprecedented scale. The police and paramilitary forces, including Assam Rifles, are conducting pre-dawn cordon-and-search operations at several places. During a search on Saturday evening, insurgent leader Anand Laishram, 21, of Chajing Karam near Imphal was arrested by the joint forces. Election ploy: Cong.Mr. Modi is likely to announce a slew of developmental projects during his visit lasting a few hours. However, Congress MLA N. Loken said: “It is too late. Mr. Modi and other BJP leaders may announce some projects involving huge amounts. This is mere election ploy. Because no construction work can be taken up in view of the forthcoming Lok Sabha election.”Police sources said the search operations would continue. Identification papers of all youngsters are being verified. The police said the arrested insurgent leader, Anand Laishram, took part in the June 4, 2015 ambush against soldiers at Paraolen in Chandel district, in which 18 Army men were killed on the spot and 11 others were seriously injured. Authorities had announced a reward ₹2 lakh for information leading to his arrest, the police said.last_img read more

Stylish Sonia dazzled at PM’s dinner

first_imgWhile all eyes are on Michelle Obama’s wardrobe during her India visit, Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, too, made some style news.Congress chief Sonia Gandhi sported a bright coloured sari during her meeting with US President Barack Obama on Monday.Sitting at the same table as the Obamas at the private dinner hosted by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his wife Gursharan Kaur, Sonia tweaked her personal style just a bit to show her appreciation.Sonia may not have been as eclectic and experimental as Michelle, who was dressed in a dazzling black and gold ensemble by Indo-American designer Naeem Khan, but she still managed to create some ripples with her choice of a sari. While no one expected her to wear a gown or something extremely festive, she departed a little bit from her trademark style to show she made an extra effort for the party.Dressed in a midnight blue traditional weave silk sari with a mahogany gold border, one saw her in a colour she has probably never worn before. Even her choice of gold drop earrings is something she isn’t generally associated with. Considering she gave her usual neutrals, pastels, khadi and pearls a miss, which was a noticeable departure from her style. While Michelle is iconic in that she mixes high street labels with high end ones and keeps it constantly innovative, Sonia’s appeal comes from keeping it consistently chic and personal. Her trademark traditional weave saris, kitten heels and neatly done hair have got her a style icon’s tag many a time. She does, however, tweak her granny chic look now and then, when the occasion demands it.advertisementShe is known for her love of Paithani saris and white cotton churidar-kameezes. So the sari, which looked like a kanjeevaram, was quite ‘dressy’ for her. She usually goes for temple designs, ikatweaves and gold threadwork only on rare occasions.last_img read more
