Game of Thrones season 8 opening credits hint at events to come

Last Hearth is the ancestral home of House Umber, and if you watched the premiere, you know what happens there. Note the icy tiles representing the White Walkers reaching out to it, showing the path of the dead as they march. Also note the spiral pattern that plays out in a gruesome scene from the episode.Winterfell is comingNext, the camera shoots to Winterfell, the Starks’ beloved home. Winterfell has always been in the credits, but not like this. Here the camera swoops through the godswood and then dives inside the castle itself. It races through the Stark crypt, where there’s a statue of Lyanna Stark, among others. Her life, and the son she delivered before dying, is only going to keep returning as a plot point here. And there are plenty of rumors that the crypt will figure heavily in this season’s episodes. Could the dead be resurrected? It’s been known to happen.King of the hillKing’s Landing is next, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms, home of the Iron Throne and the Red Keep. Look for Qyburn’s scorpion and dragon skulls from past historical battles. Just a reminder that no one is bowing down to the terrifying dragons without a fight. And there’s the Iron Throne, which really doesn’t look worth all this blood and death. The Lannister lion is shown above it now, but maybe not for long.More to comeThe credits aren’t going to be stagnant, so stay alert for clues in future weeks.”I’ll say that there are differences (in the credits) in every single episode,” art director Kirk Shintani told BuzzFeed. “From episode to episode, pay attention, because there’s lots of hints scattered around.” 57 Photos Now that the final season premiere of Game of Thrones has aired, it’s time to roll things back and take a dragon’s-eye view of those new opening credits. (Spoilers ahead.)The credits have always been complex and rewarded repeat and close viewings. The elaborate opening spins through the map of Westeros and changes from week to week. But they’re even fresher this season, as the creative team that designed the credits wanted a whole new chance to remake them.”We wanted to explore the idea that there was more under the surface than previous seasons,” creative director Angus Wall told BuzzFeed in an interview published Sunday. “And that there was an interior and a depth in terms of the layers beneath the surface that we had only hinted at before.”Astrolabe newnessThe credits begin inside of an elaborate astronomical instrument called an astrolabe. If you’re quick on the pause button, you can see it’s covered with murals depicting past plotlines that shaped the story, from the Red Wedding to the birth of Daenerys’ dragons to the fall of the Wall. Look for the Red Comet, an omen of major events, such as the dragons’ return. Drew Angerer/Getty ImagesActing US Defence Secretary Patrick Shanahan warned any nations that might be considering anti-satellite (ASAT) weapons tests like the one India carried out on Wednesday to “not make a mess” in space, noting the debris that can be left behind.”My message would be: we all live in space, let’s not make it a mess. Space should be a place where we can conduct business. Space is a place where people should have the freedom to operate,” Shanahan told a small group of reporters on Wednesday, without saying whether he believed India’s test left debris. He said the United States was still studying the Indian test.”You cannot make (space) unstable. We cannot create the debris problem that ASAT tests create. So, thoughtfulness goes a long way.”India’s foreign ministry played down any risk of debris, noting the test was in low-Earth orbit and said the remnants would “decay and fall back on to the Earth within weeks.”India would only be the fourth country to have used such an anti-satellite weapon after the United States, Russia and China, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said. The United States ran the first anti-satellite test in 1959 when satellites themselves were rare and new.Shanahan noted that, given the increasing global reliance on space, it was important to create rules of the road for space.”I think not having rules of engagement is worrisome. So, how people test and develop technologies are important,” he said, adding: “I would expect anyone who tests does not put at risk anyone else’s assets.”center_img Narendra Modi: It is not Modi’s Strength, It is the strength of your vote, that the world is witnessing todaylast_img read more

Bangladesh cant bear burden of Rohingyas for long Khaleda

first_imgBNP chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia holds a Rohingya child in her arms while visiting Rohingya camp in Balukhali of Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar. Photo: BNP Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday urged the government and international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to resolve the Rohingya crisis, reports UNB.She made the call while talking to newsmen after distributing relief materials among displaced Rohingyas at Moynargona Rohingya camp in Ukhiya. The BNP chief also urged Myanmar to take back its nationals ensuring their security and citizenship for the sake of humanity.”We think the Rohingya crisis won’t be resolved only by distributing relief materials. The Rohingyas will have to be repatriated through discussions and strong diplomatic efforts so that they can live their own country with security and without fear,” she said.Mentioning that the government could not yet take any effective step to resolve the Rohingya problem, Khaleda said, “The Bangladesh government must strengthen its diplomatic efforts to send back the Rohingyas. Alongside, the international organisations will have to take responsibility for repatriating them on humanitarian ground.”The BNP chief called upon the international community to come forward to ensure the safe return of Rohingyas to their own country. “I appeal to the international organizations: You please translate your words into actions to overcome the problem.”Khaleda said the international community should understand Bangladesh is a poor, small and densely populated country. “Though we’re poor, we have got the big heart and we love people. That’s way locals are making their best efforts and providing money from their pockets to ease the pains and sufferings of the Rohingyas. She further said, “But it’s not possible for us to bear it for a long time. So, Myanmar should take steps to take their citizens back to their country as early as possible as winter is approaching fast as the rainy season is over.”Khaleda Zia arrived at Ukhia around 1:00pm to visit four Rohingya camps and a medical camp set up by pro-BNP physicians’ body, Doctors’ Association of Bangladesh (DAB). She will return to Chittagong later in the evening.last_img read more

Angry Birds Go drives straight into your wallet with inapp purchase ov

first_imgWhat would have otherwise been a really fun game was brutally ripped open and stuffed with in-app purchases today. Please, a moment of silence for Angry Birds Go!.When Rovio announced their intention to bring what appeared to be a Mario Kart clone to mobile devices, there was a great deal of excitement. We all know Nintendo isn’t going to bring their addictive yet wonderful racing game to anything other than the 3DS and Wii U, so someone else needed to step up if it was ever going to happen. The Angry Birds franchise has been a global success, due just as much to compelling gameplay as it was good business sense. Unfortunately, it’s hard to feel anything more than resentment towards the business decisions made in Angry Birds Go! after about 20 minutes of gameplay.Everything about the first few minutes of Angry Birds Go! was done exactly right. There’s a few trial races to get you familiar with the controls, and when you’re ready to move on you can pick one of three karts that best suit your driving style and move on. After another race you realize that the coins you have been collecting can be spent on upgrading your kart, and all the makings of a great game fall into place. Suddenly you reach the end of the next race and you notice there’s a pulsing button allowing you to double the amount of coins you make forever, and the first of a never ending assault on your wallet begins.Doubling your coins every race will cost you $7 in real money, which in reality is probably what Rovio could have charged for the game and still been incredibly successful. It’s not a requirement that you spend this money, but that pulsing icon will be at the end of every race you play ever again unless you do. Heading back to the shop after this experience will show you that there are now more karts available for you to check out. The two karts that you didn’t choose in the beginning of the game are now available for five coins each, but there are four others in the list now.The next one you see costs $3 of real money to own, which is immediately followed by a slightly improved kart that is 50% off today. That kart is currently $10, which would seem like a lot if it weren’t sitting next to two more slightly improved karts that are $50 each. Keep in mind, even if you own one of these expensive karts, you can’t just race it whenever you want. Your bird will get tired after a certain number of races, and you’ll be prompted to either pay real money for an energy boost or you’ll have to come back and play later. You can unlock more characters and switch them out as the game progresses, but the whole mechanic is grossly unnecessary. On top of in-app purchases, there are sponsored items that you can take advantage of. You can soup up your engine with Pepperidge Farm Goldfish, or you can consult a State Farm agent about making sure your vehicle remains in good racing condition. There are also physical karts that can be bought at toy stores that you’ll be able to add to the game via QR code, much in the same way that Angry Birds Star Wars 2 did. The end result is what was probably a really fun game a one point but is now mostly ruined by the endless torrent of grabby hands in search of your digital bank account.last_img read more

Scientists say the American lion is not a lion after all

Male sabertoothed cats were pussycats compared to macho lions © 2010 PhysOrg.com The best preserved fossils of Panthera atrox have been found in the La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles and are mostly housed in the University of California Museum of Paleontology. Over the last 40,000 years the tar pits have trapped and preserved many animals in the thick asphalt deposits, because they were attracted to water that often covered and concealed the asphalt. Around 90 percent of the large animals found in La Brea were carnivores, presumably attracted to the area by the animals trapped in the sticky asphalt, and then becoming trapped themselves. The largest of the cat family found in the tar pits is the Panthera atrox. The new study, by Per Christiansen of the Zoological Museum in Copenhagen, Denmark, and John Harris of the George C. Page Museum in Los Angeles in the U.S. used a range of statistical and shape analysis methods to compare large numbers of skulls of modern and extinct pantherine cats. They analyzed 23 dimensions on the skulls and found P. atrox has some similarities to lions but also many differences. The mandibular morphology is closer to jaguars and tigers than to lions. The researchers concluded that P. atrox was evolved from a line of cats that immigrated into the Americas in the mid Pleistocene, and which gave rise in the late Pleistocene to P. atrox and the jaguar.Panthera atrox was one of the largest cats ever, weighing in at over 350 kg and attacking prey animals as large as the wild horse and bison. It is believed to have inhabited open habitats, like the largest individuals of the modern jaguar, and became extinct around 10-12,000 years ago. At its height the American lion ranged from Alaska and the Yukon to Mexico. The paper was published in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. (PhysOrg.com) — There has been some debate over the last century or so about whether the extinct American lion, Panthera atrox, which dates from the Pleistocene, is related to present day African lions (Panthera leo) or to the jaguar (Panthera onca). Most paleontologists consider P. atrox as a lion, and have in the past even classified the American lion as Panthera leo rather than a separate species. Now a new study has challenged previous classifications and found the American lion was a distinct species and more similar to the jaguar than the lion. Flames erupt at building on Lenin Sarani none injured

first_imgKolkata: A major fire broke out at a multi-storied building located on Lenin Sarani near Lotus Crossing on Sunday evening. Six fire tenders doused the fire within a few hours. None got injured or trapped in the incident.According to sources, on Sunday at around 5:30 pm locals saw smoke coming out of a building’s roof located at 171, Lenin Sarani. Immediately, Bowbazar police station and the fire brigade were informed. Initially four fire tenders were pressed into action and later two more were called in. A hydraulic ladder was also sent. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataLocal residents informed that there is a guest house at the said building. On Sunday, fire broke out on a temporary structure and spread to the fourth floor. As the building was evacuated before the fire spread, none was hurt. On the roof a temporary structure had been made, but the purpose of the structure is not clear yet. Some locals stated that it was being used as the kitchen for the guest house, whereas others claimed that an undergarment factory used to run there. Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in stateTo control the blaze, firefighters went to the roofs of other adjacent buildings and started spraying water in ‘zig zag’ method. The hydraulic ladder was used to spray water from Lenin Sarani. While firefighters were dousing the fire, the temporary structure on the roof collapsed. Meanwhile, occupants of the other adjacent buildings got panic stricken and went outside. Also due to thick black smoke, some locals felt uneasy and breathless. At around 7 pm, the fire was controlled. Later, Fire minister Sujit Bose went to the spot and interacted with the fire brigade officials. “Our men are working. Fire has been controlled. Anything more can be said only after inquiry,” said Bose. MLA Nayna Bandyopadhyay also went to the spot. It has been alleged that the temporary construction which was made on the roof of the building, is illegal. But it is yet to be confirmed from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) whether any permission was given to erect such a structure. Sources informed that whether the building owner and the guest house owner had obtained all the necessary permissions from the competent authorities or not will be checked. If any flaw is found, the fire brigade may lodge a complaint against the building owner and the guest house owner.last_img read more

Not So TechSavvy

first_imgNovember 25, 2008 Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. Some entrepreneurs are naturally tech-savvy. For the rest of us, technology seems like just one more daunting task to master. Even choosing the right cell phone or PDA, such as a BlackBerry, has become a complex and time-consuming effort. But when you’re running a business, you need to maintain a certain level of professionalism from the start–especially when it comes to tech basics like e-mail, website and communications. Fortunately, there are countless programs you can tap for help on tasks ranging from e-mail blasts to telephone conference calling to website add-ons, even with limited technical know-how. I’ll share a few of them here.First and most importantly, take a look at your e-mail address. As the owner of a company reaching out to potential retailers, partners or media, it’s essential to present a professional name to the world–and that should begin with your e-mail communications. A common mistake I frequently see business owners make is that they continue to use generic e-mail addresses like Gmail, Hotmail or Yahoo. While these are great free services for personal e-mail, it’s easy, inexpensive and essential to register an e-mail address that instead incorporates your company name. For example, if you sell widgets and your name is Jane Smith, you’d register Jsmith@widgets.com as your e-mail address. It doesn’t cost much and it’s simple to do, but it already sets you apart. There are countless services (such as www.1and1.com ) that enable you to register your own e-mail, including, most likely, your current internet service provider. You may also wish to “bundle” this service at one of the many companies that also offer web hosting, web design, internet service and more web-related resources under one roof.A relatively inexpensive service that can help kick up email blasts, surveys or newsletters is Constant Contact. This company offers a wide variety of pre-designed templates to help you create great looking professional e-mails. You don’t need design skills or knowledge of HTML–all of that is done for you, and even design novices find it easy to use. The site also provides tools to store, track and manage your e-mail contacts. Best of all, you’re charged monthly by the number of e-mails you send or the amount of survey responses you receive, and monthly fees start at just $15. So that means if you’re starting small, say, an e-mail blast of under 500 recipients, you don’t have to pay the big ticket prices.Another service that can help you create professional e-mail surveys is Survey Monkey. This service helps you design and create great looking, easy-to-read surveys, (again, without any design skills or HTML knowledge) plus manage contacts and analyze results. The service also lets you download raw data into spreadsheet or database format to help you organize and evaluate your feedback.Of course, you can’t neglect your web site. Often it’s the first (or only) impression you’ll make on customers, potential retailers, the media and more. Not only should you make sure it looks professional, it should also be searchable. When people type in search words related to your company, your business should be one of the first to come up. Unless you are design- and HTML-proficient, I recommend getting help. This will ensure your site looks great and that it supports your brand (e.g., if you have a fun consumer product it should look inviting, appealing and creative; if you have a business-to-business product it should look crisp, professional and reliable). And don’t forget that good writing and proofreading also go a long way in maximizing your web marketing and/or sales tactics. Whether you hire a local freelance designer, a web design firm, or you take advantage of the countless web design and hosting companies online that provide do-it-yourself templates, be sure to take the time to strategize what you want your site to do and what message you’d ultimately like it to convey. One such site that provides professional-looking templates is www.yahootemplates.com .Another cool site I recently discovered that can really help make your web site pop is Audio Acrobat. This site allows you to record audio or video content that you can upload to your current website to make it come alive. For example, if you’d like to record a personal message and speak directly to customers, or you’d like to upload a media appearance or a product demonstration, this site makes it easy and affordable to do so. Once again–few tech skills required. When you find yourself getting off the computer and on the phone, www.freeconferencecall.com may come in handy. This site helps you communicate via professional conference calling services, and some of them are even free. So instead of investing in an expensive telephone conference calling system, this company provides conference calling services for up to 150 callers for free just by scheduling with them. You can also pay a fee for more specialized services, such as toll-free conference calling, conference call recording, or clearer, all-digital connections. Basically, whatever suite of conference call services you need, this company provides; and your business calls, seminars or virtual meetings can operate without a hitch.Of course, these are just a few of a deluge of services available to your business to help you communicate via e-mail, the web and the phone with professionalism; even if your company is just one or two employees strong. Talk to fellow business owners, search the internet and ask for recommendations when other business requirements arise along the way; chances are there’s a company that will cater to your needs. And remember, perception is everything–retailers and customers will take you more seriously if you already look like an established, profitable business they can rely on. 5 min read Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Opinions expressed by Entrepreneur contributors are their own. Forget Constant Communication This App Offers Instant Communication

first_img Editor’s Note: The TrepLabs column puts little-known but notable apps and their makers in the spotlight each week. For more information on how to become a TrepLabs app, go to TrepLabs.com, and to contribute to the discussion surrounding these apps, tweet us @TrepLabs.Kyle Richey is a millennial in the truest sense of the moniker. The 27-year-old Troy, Ohio resident isn’t just an early adopter of technology, however. He’s wants to create it too.“I love apps. I have downloaded so, so many of them,” says Richey, who started out in entrepreneurship with a web marketing company called Conquer Apathy in 2006.Richey says his first business Conquer Apathy earns six figures annually. But rather than use the profits to splurge on himself and his family, Richey two years ago decided to turn his mobile-app addiction into a mobile-app enterprise called Pure Signal. The company’s second app, Slide Contacts seeks to be “the fastest way to call, text and email the people you talk to most” with a one-step sliding motion, according to Richey. An industrial and systems engineer by training, Richey couldn’t help toying with the design of the apps he’s encountered, trying to optimize the user experience. “Industrial engineers make things better. The optimization thing is in my blood,’” Richey said. With Slide Contacts, users can see their associates in a “favorites” list, and slide right on a contact to call them, slide left to text message or slide way left to email. (Check out this quick tutorial.)Slide Contacts debuted in Apple’s App Store in June, with a more cleanly designed version launching last month. Richey plans to roll out an Android version next year.Market opportunityA review from Appsfire, an app for discovering other apps, helped spur 12,000 free downloads of Slide Contacts when it first hit the App Store, Richey says.Kyle Richey launched Pure Signal to feed his need to create apps. The company’s second app, Slide Contacts, helps people reach out to favorite contacts in a jiffy.Slide Contacts has since been selling for 99 cents a pop, and has more than 15,000 users.“All the positive feedback emails have been very encouraging, especially the people that have put it in their dock. … I’ve noticed a lot of people saying they’ve completely stopped using the phone and messages app on their home screen,” Richey says.He suspects that it is not as much an app for social networking, the app’s original category, in which it reached No. 6 in the App Store. Rather, Slide Contacts is more a time-saving tool for people who are juggling work and family commitments. It has since been moved to the productivity category.Related: Independent App Developers, Meet TrepLabs“It’s productivity all the way,” Richey said. Plus, he’s found that users really like the “cool” factor of the app’s sliding gestures, minimalist design and 10 themes to customize the look and feel of the interface.ChallengesStill, great design doesn’t always translate into more sales. Richey learned this lesson the hard way with his last app, CalcForm. About $19,500 in development expenses produced $500 in revenue over two years. With Slide Contacts, he says he has been much more conscientious about getting his idea validated. For instance, he tapped his friends and family and of course random strangers to test out the app.“The validation is key,” says Richey. “Show people the prototypes. Ask people a bunch of questions.”Strengths Seems simple enough, but Richey has proven himself to be a strategic thinker. He started Conquer Apathy two years before his college graduation, and then flipped the profits over to his new Pure Signal venture in 2011. He learned from the stumble over CalcForm. And Pure Signal already has a beta version of a goal tracker app called Strides that has been quietly selling for $2.99 in the App Store with little to no promotion. The official launch of Strides is planned for December, before the New Year’s resolutions season, and a web version is in the works so users can sync their goals across all their devices.Related: In Mobile Gaming, the ‘Eyes’ Have ItEven so, the task at hand is Slide Contacts and how to position it. One possibility could be to give it up for free, then sell premium versions of the app with more customization options. “We’ve talked about doing it as a mass market thing,” Richey says. What do you think he should do?
