Readers could also register to win products featured in the Beauty Awards as well as a sweepstakes to win a $1,000 Sephora gift card. Advertisers Respond, Ad Pages up 22.5 PercentThere are a total of 17 tags in the issue–13 videos and four slideshows. Of the 13 videos, seven were tied directly to winning brands in the Beauty Awards. “We don’t pick the winning brands by advertisers, it happens independent of that,” says Watt. “Seven of the videos were tied to actual winners and we did go to those brands’ agencies and ask if they wanted to be part of this.” Of those seven brands, five (Rusk, Sally Hansen, Olay, Schick and Aveeno) decided to come into the issue. Sally Hansen, Schick and Rusk were all new advertisers. Health asked for an incremental magazine ad rather than selling directly against the digital component. Ad pages in the May 2011 issue are up 22.5 percent over May 2010. The magazine is planning to repeat the program in October for its Food Awards. Health magazine’s May issue features Microsoft Tag technology as part of an effort to drive readers to bonus content online. The program requires readers to download the free Microsoft Tag app, which allows the reader to scan the issue via smartphone to see bonus video and slideshows related to the issue. The feature went live on April 19 and in the last six days the magazine has generated 5,000 downloads with many subscriber issues yet to be delivered, according to publisher Dave Watt. The Microsoft Tag program is packaged with the Health Beauty Awards, which recognize best buys among beauty products. “Microsoft presented this to us and we thought it was a really cool thing but we had to have the right idea,” says Watt. “We thought, what if we use the tags to bring the awards to life? We’d have judges appear in video to talk about the products, why they picked them and offer tips to readers such as the best way to apply eye shadow. We didn’t want editors just saying, ‘I picked Olay because of x.’ That’s not adding value, that’s just parroting what was in the magazine.”While Microsoft Tags are free to create, Health hired an outside company to shoot the videos and a mobile vendor to create connections with the tags and mobile phones. “You have to have those videos mobile-enabled to be properly viewable on smartphones,” says Health director of integrated marketing Zovig Garboushian. The video features bonus content beyond the beauty awards, including a behind-the-scenes look at the cover shoot with singer Miranda Lambert, yoga moves and spring style tips. “When Microsoft met with us, they said, ‘To make this work, you’ve got to have it integrated throughout the magazine, not just in one little section,’” says Watt.
2 Tech Industry Digital Media Politics Internet Services Tags Comments Facebook Facebook has released a progress report on its civil rights audit, which shows it’s made some significant changes like strengthening efforts to fight voter suppression and cracking down on fake accounts seeking to influence political views.The social network unveiled on Tuesday the results of the first six months of the audit (PDF), which it launched in May in response to demands from civil rights organizations. Laura Murphy, a civil liberties leader and longtime ACLU director, led the audit. After meeting with civil rights leaders and experts, Murphy said in the progress report, Facebook decided to focus the first phase of its audit on preventing voter intimidation and suppression ahead of the US 2018 midterm elections.The social network acknowledged that implementation took longer than expected but said it was able to make important changes on its platform including strengthening efforts against voter suppression; supporting voter engagement; bringing in voting experts to inform training and policy; adding ways for users to report incorrect voting information; creating channels for state election authorities to report potential voter suppression content; and tackling fake accounts. Facebook also highlighted its “war room” efforts to combat fake election news leading up to the midterms. “Facebook is committed to working with leading US civil rights organizations to strengthen and advance civil rights on our service. They’ve raised a number of important concerns, and I’m grateful for their candor and guidance,” Sheryl Sandberg, chief operating officer of Facebook, said in a blog post. “We know that we need to do more: to listen, look deeper and take action to respect fundamental rights.” The social media giant plans to continue the audit in 2019, focusing on content moderation and creating a “civil rights accountability infrastructure” to make sure Facebook stays on the right track. It also provides them a platform for direct interface with art and craft lovers, share their talent with the urban elite and know the customers’ taste and preferences for adapting their product designs and creations accordingly. Commenting on the importance of encouraging tribal artisans of the country, he said, “Ministry of Tribal Affairs will provide more and more such platforms for tribal artisans so that they can sell their products directly to the consumer without middlemen”. He also urged media, NGOs and particularly urban youth to come forward to popularise the tribal products and bring the tribals into the main stream of the society. TRIFED, which focuses on training for skill upgradation and capacity building of tribal artisans and minor forest produce gatherers, has been taking a number of promotional initiatives for marketing of tribal products. From a single sales outlet of TRIBES India in 1999 at 9, Mahadev Road, Delhi, it has established 34 outlets of its own and 10 Consignment outlets across the country. TRIFED has also initiated the concept of sourcing tribal products by organising Tribal Artisan Melas (TAMs) to identify new artisans and products from different regions/ states where tribal artisans are invited to display their products for selection and inclusion in the range of products marketed by TRIFED.The exhibition, which will be open till November 11, will have hand crafted items, handloom products, dry flowers, cane and bamboo products, tribal jewellery, Dhokra craft, tribal weaves, embroidery, tribal paintings etc, showcased at the venue.

For Jackson Palmer, a full-time marketing product manager at Adobe, however, cyber currency took on a whole new dimension when a well-timed joke ballooned into the $30-million network known as Dogecoin, an open-source, peer-to-peer digital currency.To get the inside scoop on this incredible story, I sat down with Dogecoin founder Palmer for some interesting insights into the world of digital currency and his unexpected rise to fame.The launch of Dogecoin.Palmer didn’t set out to launch a new currency — all he did was make an innocent Twitter joke proposing “Dogecoin” in the wake of Bitcoin’s intense press coverage and an article on the Gawker website marking 2013 as the year of the Doge meme. Digital-currency enthusiasts latched on to the idea, and Palmer was able to change Bitcoin’s code to include the Comic Sans exclamations that are part of the Shiba Inu-based meme.Image credit: DogecoinThis was enough to launch the currency and corresponding website in just a few hours and, according to Palmer, “The rest, as they say, is history.”Related: Bitcoin Is Now Classified as a Commodity in the U.S.Understanding digital currency.To understand the massive impact of Dogecoin, you first need to understand how digital currency works.“Just think of it as a digitized credit,” Palmer says.Essentially, cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin and Dogecoin operate by creating a massive, open ledger that records every transaction that has ever occurred on the currency’s network. Individual users are given a “public key” (basically, a long stream of digits than can be represented as a QR code), which can be used to either send or receive funds for a small fee.Where things get really interesting, though, is that every single device that records a balance in a given digital currency — whether Bitcoin, Dogecoin or another alternative — maintains a record of the full network’s transactions. So while traditional banks and services such as Paypal are vulnerable to system-wide outages stemming from major hacks, digital-currency markets can carry on as usual, thanks to their decentralized nature.Is digital currency safe?For the most part, cryptocurrencies’ infrastructure keeps them safe, as developers would need to get more than 51 percent of the network to agree to changes in the way that the currency operates. Even the fees generated by digital-currency transactions contribute minimally to fraud because the fees go to the data miners who push updates to the network successfully, not to owners or investors who could abuse the system for profit.That’s not to say that safety issues don’t exist. The Mt. Gox bankruptcy, for instance, demonstrates that services built of digital currencies can be as susceptible to hacking attacks as traditional banking institutions. PCWorld also acknowledges that digital currencies aren’t protected or insured by anybody, so if your computer (or your cryptocurrency wallet-hosting service, as in the case of InstaWallet) is hacked, these irreversible transactions could result in losses.However, programs such as these can also be used for good. Palmer attributes the growth of Dogecoin to the early creation of a bot that lets website readers “tip” site writers with small amounts of real currency (rather than just a Facebook “Like”).“People liked the idea so much that they started tipping their friends who had never heard of Dogecoin, so it created a sort of built-in virality,” he says.Related: Citigroup Is Testing Its Own Bitcoin: ‘Citicoin’Lessons from Dogecoin’s growth.As a technical marketer by trade, Palmer had quite the learning curve to get up to speed with cryptocurrency basics. His overnight education, along with the network’s surprising success, led him to a few interesting revelations:1. Be innovative.Now an advocate for online payments as a whole, Palmer estimates that cash could be obsolete in as little as 20 years. Getting there, however, will require both innovative new technologies such as Dogecoin and the adoption of these new products and services by a wide enough pool of customers to become self-sustaining.Palmer sees tremendous potential in these technologies, and encourages others to look forward to the possibilities that the future holds for digital currencies.2. Be aware of what you’re selling.Palmer argues that all marketers, including those in cryptocurrencies, should be aware of what they’re selling. He’s made it a point to take on small side projects throughout his career that give him the opportunity to learn new skills. Apart from his endeavors in digital currency, he also learned web development to ensure that he could communicate clearly with Adobe’s customers.You can do the same. Look for opportunities to develop complementary skill sets, then pursue them, even if you have to do so in your off hours.3.
