Chaiwala turns Rafalewala: Mamata Banerjee

first_imgWest Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday called the Rafale deal a “big scam” and said that she supported the views of the Congress party on this issue. One of the most vocal critics of the BJP-led government at the Centre, Ms. Banerjee has not spoken much about the Rafale deal. Asked about The Hindu’s revelations on the deal, the West Bengal Chief Minister said Mr. Modi is used to taking unilateral decisions and interfering in every issue and referred to demonetisation.“I was not sure how much money was involved but something has happened behind the curtains in the deal. Rafale is a big scam and I support Congress on this,” she said. The Trinamool Congress chairperson said Mr. Modi turns out to be a chaiwala (tea vendor) during the polls and becomes Rafale-wala after it. During his public meeting at Jalpaiguri Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said he had a deep bond with north Bengal which produces tea as he had once been a tea vendor. Row over circuit courtMs. Banerjee also took strong exception to the Mr Modi’s inaugurating the Circuit Bench of the Calcutta High Court at Jalpaiguri during the day.Speaking to journalists Ms Banerjee said neither the State government nor the High Court was informed of the inauguration. “The manpower for the Circuit Bench has to be provided by us. The High Court will send judges. It is like the groom and the bride are missing and the band party comes and plays a political tune,” the Chief Minister said.During his rally Mr. Modi had criticised the State government for the delay in opening up the Circuit Bench.last_img read more

UAAP Starting 5: Week 8

I think he [Mourinho]is the only coach that he respects.”The current president doesn’t really trust much in coaches, but in Mourinho’s case he really, really backed him many times in difficult moments.”When [Julen] Lopetegui left, I said I’m sure Mourinho will be here and I don’t rule out him being with Real in the near future.”Calderon continued to say: “I think [Mourinho] has been the main problem when he’s been in other clubs.”When he was here, he was blaming everyone for the defeats. I think that is a grave mistake. It is a problem always.”Also it makes a confrontation with the players and it’s been happening with Man United with [Paul] Pogba, with [Eric] Bailly.”It was the same here, with Cristiano [Ronaldo], with Iker Casillas, with Sergio Ramos and I think that’s a problem, he’s always blowing his own trumpet and that for a coach, I think is a big mistake.”And, we have the example of [Zinedine] Zidane. He did completely the opposite.”Backstage, he has been more with the team and that’s the way in my point of view to train a great team of great players. Buckeyes blank Zips in first game of Luke Fickell era

On a day of many firsts for Ohio State football, Luke Fickell earned the most important one: His first win as coach. In his first start, redshirt senior quarterback Joe Bauserman was 12-for-16 passing for 163 yards and three touchdowns, and also ran for 32 yards and one touchdown in three quarters of work. Jake Stoneburner became the first OSU tight end to catch three touchdowns in a game and, along with a stingy OSU defense, the Buckeyes defeated the Akron Zips, 42-0, in front of 105,001 fans at Ohio Stadium. Saturday’s game was the team’s first since former coach Jim Tressel was forced to resign as OSU coach on May 30 after failing to self-report NCAA violations committed by his players. No. 18-ranked OSU (1-0) also had nine players suspended for the game, including DeVier Posey, Mike Adams, Dan Herron and Solomon Thomas, who are suspended for the first five games of this season. Jordan Whiting was also banned from Saturday’s game, as were Corey Brown, Travis Howard and Jordan Hall, whose suspensions were announced on Thursday. “We’ll focus on what we have and not what we’ve lost,” Fickell said in his post game press conference. “We’ll continue to move forward. Even with everything that’s been outside and out and around us, the players have done a really good job of focusing.” As Fickell promised during a Tuesday press conference, Bauserman took the first snap of the game, and then made the most of his first drive as an OSU starter. Bauserman led the Buckeyes on an eight-play, 74-yard scoring drive. After eluding a tackle in the backfield, Bauserman scampered 15 yards into the end zone. The ensuing point-after attempt put OSU up, 7-0. After forcing a punt on Akron’s second possession, Fickell endured the first missed opportunity in his short time as the Buckeyes’ coach. Redshirt freshman tailback Rod Smith carried five times for 31 yards to help lead OSU into scoring position, but fumbled inside the 5-yard line. OSU’s defense forced a three-and-out and a third consecutive punt by Akron (0-1), however. Enter true freshman quarterback Braxton Miller, who stepped onto the Horseshoe’s turf to lead his first drive. Miller kept the ball and ran for two yards on his opening play, however, his first pass attempt was bobbled and dropped by junior tight end Reid Fragel. Miller was then forced to smother the ball after an errant snap on his third play under center, and the Buckeyes punted. After Akron’s fourth punt of the game, Bauserman retook the offensive reins on OSU’s next possession. That drive, which covered 64 yards and lasted 5:35, resulted in a 28-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jake Stoneburner and a 14-0 lead for OSU. Kicker Drew Basil missed a 40-yard field goal with 2:52 remaining in the second quarter, but the OSU defense protected the team’s two scores by limiting Akron to a single first down to that point in the game. Senior linebacker Andrew Sweat intercepted a pass by Zips’ sophomore quarterback Clayton Moore just moments later, however. Sweat stomped his feet in-bounds before falling into the OSU bench area on Akron’s 35-yard line. “(Dominic Clarke) deflected it (the pass) and I just ran to the ball,” Sweat said. “I was just trying to assist on the tackle and it ended up deflecting upward and I was lucky enough to catch it.” By game’s end, Sweat had also tallied a team-high six tackles, two of which were for losses totaling eight yards. Moore, who completed only six of 16 passes 54 yards in the game, could only help guide the Zips to 90 total yards of offense. Sweat’s interception gave OSU a chance to redeem itself — and it did. Sophomore tailback Carlos Hyde opened the drive with a 24-yard run. Three plays later, Bauserman again connected with Stoneburner for an 11-yard touchdown pass to put the Buckeyes up 21-0. On the ensuing Zips’ drive, kicker T.J. Marchese’s 41-yard field goal attempt sailed left of the uprights as time expired in the first half. On the defensive side, the Buckeyes limited Akron to 100 total yards in the half. Sweat’s interception also marked the only drive on which the Zips didn’t punt. The Buckeyes’ dominance continued at the outset of the second half. Eight plays after sophomore kick returner Corey Brown returned the opening kick of the half to Akron’s 49-yard line, Bauserman threw his third touchdown pass of the day to Stoneburner — a 2-yard pass this time — and OSU led, 28-0. Stoneburner had four catches for 50 yards on the play. He also became the first tight end in the 122-year history of Buckeyes’ football to score three touchdowns in a game, as well as the eighth player at any position to accomplish the feat. Bauserman led the Buckeyes on six of their first seven drives before Miller took command of the offense for the duration of the game. “It felt good to get out there and get good timing and get comfortable with the seniors and offensive line,” Bauserman said. “I’ll watch film and critique it (the game) and move on.” On just his third drive as a collegian, Miller celebrated his inaugural touchdown pass. Miller found wide receiver and fellow freshman Devin Smith for a 14-yard touchdown after leading OSU on a six-play, 59-yard drive. At that point, the Buckeyes led, 35-0, and both teams began to clear their benches. Miller then guided a 38-yard scoring scoring drive that Smith capped with a two-yard touchdown run to put the Buckeyes up 42-0, and went on to win by the same score. For the game, Miller and Bauserman combined to help the Buckeyes tally 517 total yards of offense. “It was good for both Braxton and I to get out there,” Bauserman said. “Braxton came in and did well and moved the ball. We both were focused.” Smith finished the game with 74 yards on 18 carries while Miller ended his afternoon 8-for-12 passing for 130 yard and one touchdown. After notching his first victory on a day when the temperature on the field rose above 100-degrees, Fickell said that he had not spoken to Tressel prior to Saturday’s game and that he was solely focused on his players’ performance. “No, I have not talked with (Tressel),” Fickell said. “I know he’s rooting for us and for these guys. We are definitely excited about having a great day out there and looking forward to getting better.” OSU plays the Toledo Rockets (1-0) on Saturday at noon at the ‘Shoe. read more

Healths Mobile Tag Issue Draws 5000 Downloads in Six Days

first_imgReaders could also register to win products featured in the Beauty Awards as well as a sweepstakes to win a $1,000 Sephora gift card. Advertisers Respond, Ad Pages up 22.5 PercentThere are a total of 17 tags in the issue–13 videos and four slideshows. Of the 13 videos, seven were tied directly to winning brands in the Beauty Awards. “We don’t pick the winning brands by advertisers, it happens independent of that,” says Watt. “Seven of the videos were tied to actual winners and we did go to those brands’ agencies and ask if they wanted to be part of this.” Of those seven brands, five (Rusk, Sally Hansen, Olay, Schick and Aveeno) decided to come into the issue. Sally Hansen, Schick and Rusk were all new advertisers. Health asked for an incremental magazine ad rather than selling directly against the digital component. Ad pages in the May 2011 issue are up 22.5 percent over May 2010. The magazine is planning to repeat the program in October for its Food Awards. Health magazine’s May issue features Microsoft Tag technology as part of an effort to drive readers to bonus content online. The program requires readers to download the free Microsoft Tag app, which allows the reader to scan the issue via smartphone to see bonus video and slideshows related to the issue. The feature went live on April 19 and in the last six days the magazine has generated 5,000 downloads with many subscriber issues yet to be delivered, according to publisher Dave Watt. The Microsoft Tag program is packaged with the Health Beauty Awards, which recognize best buys among beauty products. “Microsoft presented this to us and we thought it was a really cool thing but we had to have the right idea,” says Watt. “We thought, what if we use the tags to bring the awards to life? We’d have judges appear in video to talk about the products, why they picked them and offer tips to readers such as the best way to apply eye shadow. We didn’t want editors just saying, ‘I picked Olay because of x.’ That’s not adding value, that’s just parroting what was in the magazine.”While Microsoft Tags are free to create, Health hired an outside company to shoot the videos and a mobile vendor to create connections with the tags and mobile phones. “You have to have those videos mobile-enabled to be properly viewable on smartphones,” says Health director of integrated marketing Zovig Garboushian. The video features bonus content beyond the beauty awards, including a behind-the-scenes look at the cover shoot with singer Miranda Lambert, yoga moves and spring style tips. “When Microsoft met with us, they said, ‘To make this work, you’ve got to have it integrated throughout the magazine, not just in one little section,’” says Watt. last_img read more

Young died on Feb. 4 of natural causes in his 90th year, at his home in Stockholm. An “ancient chapel, like a shoebox sized institute,” was how Dylan described the Folklore Center, which sold records, books and sheet music and hosted concerts. Unwilling to leave folk music trapped in coffee houses, Young arranged for regular folk concerts at the Italian restaurant Gerde’s, where Dylan made his New York City professional debut in 1960. The following year, Young helped folk music spread beyond the confines of the Village, organizing Dylan’s first major performance at Carnegie Chapter Hall, a side venue adjoining Carnegie Hall. Its us or no one Nonprofit defends LGBTQ students from their univers

first_img Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn ReddIt Email,(RNS) — Over her four years at Fuller Theological Seminary’s campus in Houston, Joanna Maxon had come out to most of her teachers and classmates, and many knew that she was married to a woman. But after Maxon turned over a copy of her tax return, filed jointly with her wife, as part of her annual financial aid application earlier this year, a complaint about her marriage was brought to the dean. In October 2018, less than a year before she expected to graduate, she was suddenly dismissed.Months went by before Maxon could stand to make the situation public.“It took me a while to get to the point where I could talk about it,” Maxon said. “It feels like trauma.”But once she was ready to share her story in June, Maxon’s wife and friend got into contact with Brave Commons.Brave Commons is an advocacy organization that helps queer students like Joanna who experience discrimination, often at conservative evangelical schools. Students at these campuses are often processing their sexuality after growing up in conservative homes. Besides dealing with adversarial school bureaucracies, they are frequently dealing with their own questions about their sexuality and how to be a LGBTQ person of faith.Brave Commons offers sanctuary to those students, giving them space to ask questions about sexuality and faith and advocating for them when their colleges discriminate against them.“Institutions have more resources and money, but we have people that care,” said Lauren Ileana Sotolongo, co-executive director of Brave Commons. “We can’t put that in a bank, but that is so much more valuable.”Brave Commons executive directors Michael Vazquez, from left, Lauren Ileana Sotolongo and Erin Green. Courtesy photosSotolongo, Michael Vazquez and Erin Green, who all share the title of executive director, have had their own personal experiences with exclusion at Christian universities. While attending seminary in Michigan in 2017, Vazquez was asked by other queer students at two nearby evangelical colleges to help organize protests against homophobic speakers who had been invited to give lectures on those campuses, as well as homophobic statements made by chaplains at one of the schools. After the events, Vazquez was expelled from his seminary for his involvement.“Brave Commons was not birthed without cost,” Vazquez said of his dismissal. As increasing numbers of queer students at surrounding colleges began to reach out to him, he helped lead inclusive Bible studies and more actions. As it became clear that a number of students needed both advocacy and spiritual care, Vazquez needed more help to make the work sustainable. A friend connected him with Green and Sotolongo, who joined him as co-directors in the summer of 2018. Both were involved with underground groups for LGBTQ students at Christian colleges, and with Green on the West Coast and Sotolongo on the East, they complemented Vazquez, who was living in the Midwest at the time.Taking from mujerista theology, which focuses on the experiences and liberation of Latinx women — Vazquez emphasizes that all of their work, from their decisions as co-directors to their protection of students, is done conjunto — together. The three directors have turned Brave Commons into a national organization that advocates for LGBTQ students, especially students of color, in hopes of changing homophobic policies. They also offer support in the absence of helpful ministry from Christian institutions themselves. The unicorn is the Brave Commons mascot. Courtesy imageBrave Commons makes it clear that they provide help, not the goal. When students ask them to step in to intervene with an institution, they come to the school but will only help the students pursue their own desired outcomes. The organization will have a conversation with students to find out what they need and then pursue it with them, whether it’s a social media call to action or a protest on campus.Students may want to call attention to discrimination while maintaining their own anonymity. In these cases, Brave Commons steps in to protect the students by “diverting the attention from the students onto (themselves),” Green said. Students will often want to remain anonymous because they are financially vulnerable and could lose scholarships or support from their parents if outed. In addition to helping students organize, Brave Commons is concerned about the students’ spiritual and emotional health, which often suffers when Christian colleges push them into the shadows.“At most of the colleges and universities that we’ve worked at, students are not allowed to openly gather as a group of queer students,” Vazquez said.To reach students who are isolated, both socially and geographically, Brave Commons often uses social media. “There really is a growing network,” said Vazquez.“It’s a tradition, you could say, in the queer and trans community,” Sotolongo said of the community bond built on social media. “There’s this network of people that you know you can trust. You have your own kind of congregation that is saying that they have your back.”“So many of us have experienced the betrayal of our Christian communities,” said Matthias Roberts, host of the podcast Queerology, who says he often connects students who reach out to him to Brave Commons. “We know in our bones that no one else has our back. It’s us or no one,” he says, which speaks of a deep sense of trust in the LGBTQ Christian community.Photo by Sharon McCutcheon/Creative CommonsMany students reach out to Brave Commons simply for advice about how to be a LGBTQ person of faith. Students often can’t ask such questions publicly, and very few Christian campuses have resources for LGBTQ students.Brave Commons has developed a number of ways for students to “gather and process their gender identity through the lens of their spirituality,” Vazquez said. One is the online “Oratio” series, sermons by the co-directors that affirm all gender identities. The irony for students such as Maxon, who is now working full-time and has no current plans to finish her master’s degree, is that their search for community is often what made them turn to Christian colleges in the first place. “One of the classes that I was withdrawn from was a class called Practices of Community … It’s really challenging for me for a school to teach that and then not practice community,” Maxon said.“Fuller has a nondiscrimination policy on their website. … They talk about diversity and inclusion, but they are not including LGBTQ persons in that diversity. I think they need to be clearer,” Maxon said.Brave Commons is currently standing with Maxon in bringing attention to what Fuller has done and pressuring Fuller to be clear that they are not an inclusive space.“Will Fuller continue to pander to an idea of social justice or will it actually live for its claimed commitments to a kingdom of God that welcomes all people?” Vazquez asked.Fuller Seminary declined to comment.
