Now, a couple of years later, the latter is staring down some quality upgrades for the 2020 model year.Land Rover on Tuesday unveiled the 2020 Discovery Sport. On the spectrum of refreshes, this one is right about in the middle, making some slight visual changes while also updating the more important underlying bits. Two new powertrains have been introduced: One is a 246-horsepower I4 from the modular Ingenium engine family, while the other one slaps a 48-volt mild hybrid system into the equation, boosting its output to 286 horsepower. That new mild hybrid system comes alongside a new underlying platform. Now riding on Land Rover’s Premium Transverse Architecture platform, not only does it allow the Discovery Sport to pick up this kind of electrification, it makes the body some 13 percent stiffer. It’s also quieter, thanks to some improved sound deadening measures. As for style, it’s a little different, but not too much. The front and rear bumpers are new, and to my eyes, a little sportier-lookin’ than before. The grille is different, but I didn’t notice that until I read it in the press release. There are also some new LED lights to further differentiate the refreshed Disco Sport from its forebear.Enlarge ImageIt might take a keen eye to find the differences, but on the whole, they make for a more premium-looking SUV. Land Rover Inside, the center console has been redesigned, eschewing the rotary dial in favor of the sticklike gear lever seen on other Jaguar Land Rover vehicles. This rejiggering also makes enough space for wireless device charging, a first for the Disco Sport. Six USB ports are scattered throughout, as well. A new rearview mirror can display what the rearview camera sees, while additional cameras beneath the front end allow off-roaders to see “through” the hood on the infotainment display. The interior is further gussied up with more premium materials, including a new optional non-leather seat material made from recycled polyester microfiber. You can even spec massaging seats, if you feel like really going for broke. Behind the first row, there are new cup holders and redesigned storage spaces, in addition to extra seat configurability, bringing the total number of available seat configurations to 24.On the infotainment front, the Discovery Sport now rocks Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro system, with its 10-inch touchscreen replacing the outgoing setup. It’s not Touch Pro Duo, though — the climate controls aren’t relegated to their own screen. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, as is a 4G Wi-Fi hotspot. Safety systems are available, but not standard, and they include adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking and lane-keep assist. The 2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport hits dealerships in the summer, and pricing will be announced closer to the car’s on-sale date.Originally posted May 21.Update, June 10: Reduced mild hybrid output by 10 horsepower due to an error in Land Rover’s press release. An Echo Dot makes a fine match for any Fire edition TV, because you can use the latter to say things like, “Alexa, turn on the TV.” Right now, the 24-inch Insignia Fire TV Edition starts at just $100, while the 32-inch Toshiba Fire TV Editions is on sale for $130. Just add any Fire TV Edition to your cart, then add a third-gen Echo Dot, and presto: The latter is free. Wait — no, I’m not. As much as I respect the original intent of the holiday (which became official back in 1894), to most of us, it’s just a bonus day off — one that’s blissfully tacked onto a weekend. So, yeah, stores; go ahead, run your sales. I’m listening. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Labor Day doesn’t bring out bargains to compete with the likes of Black Friday (which will be here before you know it), but there are definitely some sales worth your time. For example:We’ve rounded up the best Labor Day mattress deals. We’ve also gathered the best Labor Day laptop deals at Best Buy.The 2019 Vizio P Series Quantum is back under $999.Be sure to check out Amazon’s roughly three dozen Labor Day deals on TVs and audio. The Indian rupee continued to strengthen on Wednesday, hitting a near two-month high against the US dollar. It appreciated by 43 paise to close at 64.98 against the greenback.A strong rebound in the rupee was supported by a weakening dollar in the wake of reduced chances of an interest rate hike by the US central bank. Last week, an official data showed that the employment growth in the US remained weak in September, leading to a decline in expectations over monetary tightening by the US Federal Reserve in 2015.”We expect INR to be one of the outperformers in the region. India is among the best positioned in Asia to benefit from lower oil prices and it is also relatively insulated from China’s economic growth slowdown (from a trade perspective) with exports to China accounting for just ~5% of India’s total exports in 2014,” said RBC Capital Markets in a note.Besides, the rupee was underpinned by a rebound in domestic stock markets, which rose for a sixth consecutive session on Wednesday amid a revival in buying interest from overseas investors. So far this month, foreign investors have bought equities worth about Rs 1,500 crore (net) in the cash market, NDTV Profit reported. The benchmark BSE Sensex index has gone up nearly 1,300 points since 29 September, the day on which the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) surprised the markets by announcing a 50 bps cut in key lending rate.Analysts said that the domestic currency will also benefit from the RBI’s decision to raise foreign investment in government bonds.Last month, the central bank said that “it would gradually increase the limits it sets for foreign investors buying government debt by up to Rs 1.2 lakh crore by March 2018.””Again, RBI is doing its part to help, announcing a range of measures to liberalise financial markets. For example, it increased the current USD30bn limit for foreign investment in govt bonds by USD18bn (by March 2018 in stages; currently fully utilized and up to 5% of outstanding),” said RBC note.
The Ebola virus that has killed scores of people in Guinea this year is a new strain — evidence that the disease did not spread there from outbreaks in some other African nations, scientists report.”The source of the virus is still not known,” but it was not imported from nearby countries, said Dr. Stephan Gunther of the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany. He led an international team of researchers who studied the genetics of the virus and reported results online Wednesday in the New England Journal of Medicine. The ongoing outbreak has caused panic and killed more than 120 people in West Africa, mostly in Guinea, according to the World Health Organization.Ebola (ee-BOH’-lah) causes internal bleeding and organ failure and is fatal in 30 percent to 90 percent of cases, depending on the strain. It spreads through direct contact with infected people, and some earlier cases have been linked to certain fruit bats that live in West Africa. There is no cure or vaccine, so containing the outbreak has focused on supportive care for those infected with the virus and isolating them to limit its spread.Earlier, health officials had said the Guinea Ebola was a Zaire strain, different from the kind that has caused cases in other parts of Africa. The Democratic Republic of Congo used to be called Zaire. The new research analyzed blood samples from 20 patients in the current outbreak and found the strain was unique.”It is not coming from the Democratic Republic of Congo. It has not been imported to Guinea” from that country or from Gabon, where Ebola also has occurred, Gunther said.Researchers think the Guinea and other strains evolved in parallel from a recent ancestor virus. The Guinea outbreak likely began last December or earlier and might have been smoldering for some time unrecognized. The investigation continues to try to identify “the presumed animal source,” they write.___Online:Journal: http://www.nejm.org

“I never call it Writer’s Block because I know I have to write anyway. I write bad pages if I am feeling blocked and eventually I end up losing them which is painful. But everyday’s hard work is sort of inspirational,” Greer said at the 10th edition of Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival. The American, who bagged the Pulitzer for his comic novel ‘Less’ in 2018, said he is not going to write anything on his new novel while “in India because it is too much fun here and I am taking a break”. Asked to share some tips for aspiring writers to keep their creativity alive, the man with six fictions in his kitty said: “I think that one should write from their weakest part and about things they are scared to share.” Also Read – Add new books to your shelfHe elaborated that if there is anything hard to write about oneself, it is truly about the person. So it is good to be imaginative to be able to reveal those things in writing. “If someone says to a writer that he/she puts too many dragons in his writing, he should put a full dragon. That is my advice and one shouldn’t let people make them mediocre and become oneself,” he explained. Geere had been writing ‘Less’ as a tragedy and it was not really working when he actually decided to start making fun of the protagonist and while swimming one day he made up his mind to write this book as a comedy. He wanted to celebrate joy. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveAsked if such recognition can be beneficial for any genre which is going out of fashion, he said: “I hadn’t thought about it, but yes it is possible that this will give courage to other writers to write literature that is a comedy or all of those things that people are bit ashamed to speak about. And especially it gives me a chance to write more on such topics.” ‘Less’ is about Arthur Less, a writer fleeing the humiliation of love, middle-age and failure. In his book, a character actually wins the Pulitzer Prize. “I am confident that this is the only book which talks about Pulitzer and then actually wins it. It never occurred to me that I would actually win it,” he said. The protagonist wears a bright blue suit for the awards which, according to Greer, symbolises his innocence and he wears it with confidence. He thought he would choose something sober for himself in real life but on a friend’s advice he “wore a red suit” for the awards as it symbolises joy.
Kolkata: A major fire broke out at a multi-storied building located on Lenin Sarani near Lotus Crossing on Sunday evening. Six fire tenders doused the fire within a few hours. None got injured or trapped in the incident.According to sources, on Sunday at around 5:30 pm locals saw smoke coming out of a building’s roof located at 171, Lenin Sarani. Immediately, Bowbazar police station and the fire brigade were informed. Initially four fire tenders were pressed into action and later two more were called in. A hydraulic ladder was also sent. Also Read – Rs 13,000 crore investment to provide 2 lakh jobs: MamataLocal residents informed that there is a guest house at the said building. On Sunday, fire broke out on a temporary structure and spread to the fourth floor. As the building was evacuated before the fire spread, none was hurt. On the roof a temporary structure had been made, but the purpose of the structure is not clear yet. Some locals stated that it was being used as the kitchen for the guest house, whereas others claimed that an undergarment factory used to run there. Also Read – Lightning kills 8, injures 16 in stateTo control the blaze, firefighters went to the roofs of other adjacent buildings and started spraying water in ‘zig zag’ method. The hydraulic ladder was used to spray water from Lenin Sarani. While firefighters were dousing the fire, the temporary structure on the roof collapsed. Meanwhile, occupants of the other adjacent buildings got panic stricken and went outside. Also due to thick black smoke, some locals felt uneasy and breathless. At around 7 pm, the fire was controlled. Later, Fire minister Sujit Bose went to the spot and interacted with the fire brigade officials. “Our men are working. Fire has been controlled. Anything more can be said only after inquiry,” said Bose. MLA Nayna Bandyopadhyay also went to the spot. It has been alleged that the temporary construction which was made on the roof of the building, is illegal. But it is yet to be confirmed from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) whether any permission was given to erect such a structure. Sources informed that whether the building owner and the guest house owner had obtained all the necessary permissions from the competent authorities or not will be checked. If any flaw is found, the fire brigade may lodge a complaint against the building owner and the guest house owner.
